The William Black Lodge and Retreat Center is located in Montreat, in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Opportunities for outdoor recreation abound.
Lake Susan, located in the center of Montreat, is just a short walk from our front porch. In summer months, you can fish or rent paddleboats there. Year-round, you can enjoy the waterfront view framed by mountains and visit the shops and small restaurants that overlook the lake.
Montreat has more than 20 hiking trails, providing everything from moderate to strenuous excursions. A map of area trails is available at our front desk. The Nature Center, located near Lake Susan, offers guided hikes. The Nature Center is operated by the Montreat Retreat Association and is generally open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday during the summer.
If you’re a tennis player, you’ll find courts nearby for summer play. If you don’t want to miss your regular indoor workout, you’ll find a fitness center in Black Mountain. Located just two miles from Montreat, Black Mountain is a quaint town known for its galleries, gift shops and Appalachian craft stores.
Asheville is about 25 minutes away. There you will find numerous things to do, from visiting arts and crafts shops to dining to tours of the world-famous Biltmore House.
